IC:

"Alright!" called out the teacher. "Welcome, all of you, to Shakespeare 101"

Did he say what?

"Oh, shit," Dorian murmured. Em giggled and the teacher stopped his lecture, glaring at her.

"Miss Hart," he said, gesturing to an open desk on the other side of the room. "There are only supposed to be two students per table. As I have no doubt that you will do nothing but keep Mr. Shaddix distracted for the rest of the semester, I would appreciate it if you moved to this seat beside where Mr. Highwind will inevitably end up sitting, should he ever arrive for class."

"Oh, shit," she muttered, grabbing her stuff and moving. Dorian stared at the chair for a moment, lifting it and moving it to the front of the classroom after a quick glare at the teacher.

A smile cracked Dorian's features, and his pencil lifted idly in the air while he stretched. As he leaned back, it wrote out the words that passed through his head.

Kane blinked, glancing to the teacher who was saying something or other and then back to the pencil floating in midair. The note finished, Kane read it, keeping Dorian in his peripheral vision.

That was--

He mouthed the profanity to finish his message to Dorian, then turned back to the front of the class and pulled out his notebook.

Shakespeare. Wrote plays. Got it.

Dorian, however, did not have the luxury of not being able to care about Shakespeare. His time in London back on Earth over the last year had instilled in him a love of literature that he had previously lacked. His library in Casa Shaddix now contained not only the works of philosophy, music theory, and psychology that he used to study, but plays by Shakespeare, Chekhov, and several other great playwrights.

Using his pencil, he began to write down the finer points of the teacher's lecture and instead began to drum with his fingers, trying to create the perfect beat for a song he was developing. Next period, perhaps, in the new music theory classroom touted as one of the colony's best, he could practice it and mold it into something new...

Dorian's drumbeat proved catchy. Kane found himself humming an improvised bassline without thinking, even as he wrote down Shakespeare's suspected birth date and naively missed the irritated glance the teacher bestowed upon him from a distance.

Dorian looked over at Kane, eyebrows raised. His blue eye sparkled with amusement and he grinned. His red eye surveyed his fellow student with curiosity.

"What do you have next period?" he asked, perfectly normally, as if he were sitting in the cafeteria instead of a high school lecture. The teacher, however, didn't even notice Dorian speaking; he was droning on about Shakespeare's suspected birthplace.

IC: Maglod interceded, in his usual abrupt fashion, seemingly completely uninterested in any dialogue the others might've shared. Neither did he apparently care about Kane most likely not knowing a shred of Teandilic.

"Aell'ahn, Kaen. Hello, Kane. Eth'ea Maglod. Dorian, ye'ath ethel re'en, amh'rai neall enad. Aen eith'eal Aenglisc. Dorian, don't ask why: tell him I can't speak English."

Kane half-turned. The teen behind him had sharp features and somewhat pointed ears. His brilliant eyes were on Dorian; Dorian, in turn, had glanced back to meet the elf-kid's gaze.

"...so Shakespeare left his wife and children to pursue a career as a playwright..."

"What language is that?" whispered Kane to Dorian, his attention half on the teacher.

"His name is Maglod, and he says hello. Sorry, he doesn't speak any sort of English to speak of, so he mainly communicates via Teandilic."

IC: "Tell him that was my sister whose seat he just took, and he'd better remove himself, if he doesn't want my falchion across his throat. And I don't care that it's the middle of class," Maglod quickly, almost too quick for Dorian to comprehend, said. Teandilic was his third language, and he spoke it perhaps even better than English.

He knew anyone would realize by throwing one glance at Em she wasn't a half-elf like him. In fact, he counted on it.

The teacher, it seemed, was drawing to a close and asking if anyone had any questions. The students, eager to escape the confines of the dull classroom, asked none. So the teacher was left to continue imparting his wisdom (at least, that was probably how he saw it) upon uninterested ears.

Another thirty-five minutes remained in the class.

Those thirty-five minutes probably seemed like an eternity to annoyed teens.

Kane frowned at Maglod's sudden effluence of syllables. "What'd he say?"

"Kidding," he said in an English boasting of perfection and only a slight Welsh accent. "Keep sitting, mate."

"Um..." Maglod's sudden smile caught Kane off-guard. "...thanks?"

Uncertainly, Kane turned back to face the front. But every few seconds he threw a glance behind him; and every several seconds, he looked to Jolek's empty seat, as if he were wishing he had moved there without a word.

Dorian snorted and began to laugh heartily, in a manner eerily similar to that of his late father's. The teacher turned to look at him, ready to pounce, but Dorian idly lifted his fingers and snapped them, and the teacher turned away, the look sliding off his face. In a millisecond, he was back to spewing on about a character analysis of Rosaline and her importance to the events of Romeo and Juliet.

It's only the first day and we're already critiquing his plays...?

IC: Maglod took one long glance at the window. Neither Claire nor Jolek had shown up yet. If Maglod knew anything, that meant one of two things. Either neither deemed it worth their time to go back to a school that was previously turned to cinders, or they both eloped together like in some bollywood movie.

Maglod didn't care about Shakespeare much. English literature bored him: it was long proven by the great elven sage Malarris and his work of collecting ancient Tylarin works that most English works of literature prior to the nineteenth century were rewritings of Old Elvish tales. So, he'd usually sleep through English classes until they got to Honore de Balzac, who was undeniably his most favourite writer before the twentieth century.

... After which, Maglod held the view that literature had died when he read that corruption of his people's history called Lord of the Rings.

OOC: oh god no what have I done I bashed LotR even if jokingly somebody stab me please

IC: He shot one more glance out the window. Nothing was out of the ordinary, or at least, nothing out of the ordinary was in sight. As his gaze returned, reluctantly, back to the teacher, he realized it ended up resting on Em. He was looking at her eyes: she was obviously happy for that brief while she had with Dorian at the beginning of class, even if it was short. Mag was glad. Somebody had to have the luxury of happiness.

Em turned and caught Mag's eye, smiling and waving at him brightly. She had missed Dorian immensely, true, and was beyond glad to see him okay (if a little bit worn and darker looking) but just having someone to talk to was nice.

Dorian caught the look the two shared and the way Em waved at him, and his stomach begin to sink? Could they...?

No. No. Mag wouldn't. They had known each other all their lives. He wouldn't screw Dorian over like that.

IC: Maglod froze up when she smiled at him. When she waved at him, he weakly raised a hand and glanced at Dorian, with the expression of someone immensely concerned that his friend would not take such an interaction as just occured wrongly.

He couldn't read Dorian's expression. For all his noble blood of a culturally higher race, he never learnt to read expressions as epically effectively as his mother's kinsmen could in all the movies. Hell, as his mother could in real life.

Fuck this shit, he sighed, leaning back and trying to fall asleep, the rhythm of the teacher's ranting on about Mercurio or some other character's importance to the story of Romeo and Juliet helping in no little bit.

Kane's actual notes lay forgotten on a past page of his notebook. His hand still wrote in time with the teacher's cadence, but not about Shakespeare:

The red star lay dying, spewing brilliant fire
blasting the planets in a plasma gyre
as if the star needs release its ire
and make its system a glorified pyre

Rhymes? Check.
Wording? Blech.
lol rhyme

Its death throes, lit with brilliant fire,
formed plasma into a blinding gyre,
an image of rage, of uncontrolled ire:
a graveyard was swapped for funeral pyre

Better. Not good enough.

Rhymes: fire, gyre, ire, pyre, expire, afire

Maglod, whaddaya think?

Kane slipped the notebook back, deciding it would be better to attempt to socialize now than to end up alienated for the rest of the semester.
